CCS TO DEVELOP IMPROVEMENT PLAN

Carrabec Community School has been designated by the Maine Department of Education as a Continuous Improvement Priority School (CIPS) for the 2011-12 school year.

This status comes as a result of the fact that CCS did not reach the target percentage for attendance set for schools last year by the No Child Left Behind Act. The target was an Average Daily Attendance rate of 93%, and CCS had a rate of 92%. The target continues to go up one point every year.

On the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) that students in grades 2-8 take each fall, CCS did not reach the target percentage of students who achieved the proficiency level for the past two years. However, last year we increased the percentage of students who achieved proficiency by 10%, which enabled us to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading. But because CCS is a CIPS School for attendance, we will also be required to develop an action plan to increase our students' performance in reading.

These school reports are available on our district web site:

Parents received letters in the mail a couple of weeks ago to let them know of our school's CIPS status and to give them the chance to transfer their child (if in grades K-5) to another district elementary school if they wished to. This right of parents is required by the No Child Left Behind Act.

Our school will be forming a committee made up of staff and parents to develop an action plan to address both attendance and reading. Some of the federal money the school receives will be used for activities and professional development to help meet the goals of increasing attendance and reading performance, and we will also be able to access some additional money from the state for this purpose. We will keep parents informed about the goals of our action plan and our progress toward our goals. If you would like to serve on the planning committee, please contact Mr. Weggler. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Campbell, Ms. Butler, or Mr. Weggler at 635-2209.
